WIAM is a private academy for the training of professional musicians, producers and music teachers. In this capacity, the Winterthur Institute for Contemporary Music (WIAM) has become an important counterpart to the state music academies. Teaching here is carried out with special care. It leads to optimal development and achievement of the students' individual abilities and self-competences. The charm of the small institution leads to a sense of achievement, which is achieved through the good learning climate and the appropriate atmosphere in individual and class lessons. This conveys self-confidence and is important for the development of one's own personality with regard to creative musical practice and later careers.
The training offered takes into account the current state of academic curriculum development and the standards of the music industry of the 21st century. Thus, in manageable steps, self-, subject-, social- and creative competence as well as independent development orientation in the instrumental/vocal area, in performance and music-theoretical subjects are acquired and practised.
The optimisation of our education is ensured by continuous evaluation as well as by cooperation with practical institutions and external experts, but also by the accrediting universities, Middlesex University London (Bachelor) and Kalaidos University of Music (Master). Aspects such as flat hierarchies, respectful communication, short decision-making processes and regular academic and professional reviews ensure that our services are optimally adapted to changing circumstances.

  • Through their chosen specialisation - pop music, jazz or music production/performance - students should acquire the knowledge, competence and confidence to pursue a successful career in music.
  • WIAM is one of the few music education institutions in Switzerland that provides its students with the knowledge, competence and confidence to pursue a successful career in music through their chosen specialisation - pop music, jazz or music production and electronic music performance.
  • Both this cross-stylistic learning method and the specialised small group teaching lead to a broad and progressive musical-creative music education and are highly appreciated by the students.
  • An important plus point for students and lecturers is the central location of the WIAM campus (only 4 minutes from Winterthur main station). All teaching rooms at the main location, including a spacious concert hall and a production studio (expanded from August 2022 with new control and recording rooms), were newly built a few years ago, taking into account the different requirements of a music academy with university degrees.
  • WIAM teaches around 80 students in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes. The Bachelor (Hons) Music is accredited by Middlesex University London, the Pedagogy Master by Kalaidos University of Music.
